Naxos, the largest and most fertile of the Cycladic islands, lies almost at the center of the Aegean Sea. Rugged mountains and green valleys make Naxos one of the most scenic of the Cycladic islands. Naxos is popular, although not as heavily visited as other Cycladic islands. Naxos landscape is reach with citrus and olive groves. The coastline of Naxos is abrupt on the south side and more sheltered to the west, with numerous inlets and sandy beaches. Naxos town or Hora , stands on a naturally amphitheatrical site on a hill side, on the northwest side of the island and is one of the most attractive towns in the Cyclads. As the visitor walks from the harbour high up to the venetian castle he will be struck by the beauty of the narrow winding lanes and the old stone houses lining them. The most alluring part of Naxos town is the residential Kastro , with winding alleyways and whitewashed houses. Marco Sanudo made Naxos town the Capital of his duchy and there are some handsome dwellings, which were built by the Venetians, many with well-kept gardens and insignia of their original residents.A visitor can take a stroll around Kastro during siesta time to experience its hushed medieval atmosphere. Naxos town is made up of four distinct areas. The harbour bustles with its cafes and fishermen at work. To the south of Naxos town ( Hora ) is Nea Hora or Aghios Georgios a concrete mass of hotels , apartments and restaurants. Apart form beautiful beaches Naxos island has beautiful little villages. The lovely tragea region is a vast plain of olive groves and unspoilt villages harboring numerous little churches. Filoti , on the slopes of Mt Zeus , is the region’s largest village. On the outskirts of the village ( coming from Naxos town ) a new asphalt road leads off right into the heart of Tragea. Following this road you will come to the isolated hamlets of Damarionas and Damalas. Apiranthos is a handsome, austere village of stone houses and steep, marble paved streets. Appolonas on the north coast was once tranquil fishing village but is now a popular resort. Apollonas has a small sandy beach and a larger pebble one. The island route from Naxos town to Apollonas winds through spectacular mountains – a worthwhile trip. With your own transport you can return to Naxos town via the west coast road passing through wild and sparsely populated country with awe-inspiring sea views. Several tracks branch down to secluded beaches. In a few words, Naxos is an island with superb beaches, attractive villages and a wealth of ancient monuments. Naxos attracts thousants of visitors every year .The good tourist amenities in Hora , make it easy to tour the charms of the island.
NAXOS BEACHES
In Naxos island , Aghios Georgios is the main holiday resort with golden sands and shallow water. The next beach after Aghios Georgios is Aghios Prokopios. Aghios Prokopios is a sheltered bay , followed by Aghia Anna which is a long strech of sand. Aghia Anna is a small resort with silver sand and water sports. For more solitude, head south 3 km over the dunes to Plaka the best beach on the island of Naxos and mainly nudist. Further south down the coast, the pure white sands of Mikri Vigla and Kastraki named after a ruined Mycenaean fortress are exceptionally good for both, swimming and water sports. Between Naxos and Amorgos island is a chain of small islands variously called the minors Cyclades islands. Ferries serve the smaller islands of the eastern Cyclades from Piraeus and from Naxos town also.

Naxos allocates airport and is executed daily flights by Athens. Also, in Naxos we can go with ferry boat and highspeed from Piraeus port and the port of Rafina.
