Skiathos Island History Despite the invasion of tourism, Skiathos remains a beautiful island, with great vegetation graphic small churches and monasteries that reached our day's trough the pages of Alexandros Papadiamantis the famous Greek novelist. The steep coasts of the island made it as a base of operations of pirates during Roman years. Skiathos Worth To See The city of Skiathos has two harbors, which are separated from a pine wood peninsula, where Mbourtzi is found. In this Venetian fortress, every year during summertime the people have cultural events, such as musical, dancing and theatrical representations. Inside Mbourtzi there is a beautiful neoclassical building, and in the entry there is the statue of the famous Greek novelist, Alexandros Papadiamantis. Near the harbor can be found the Museum of Alexandros Papadiamantis, which is accommodated in the fatherly house of the Greek writer. Despite its small size, the Museum shows the simplicity that characterized the life of the island before the invasion of tourism. In the very green hinterland of Northern part of the island, with the pine trees and olive groves, you will discover deserted monasteries and small shuttles, springs with clear waters and lot's of different birds. The calm of landscape comes contrary to the tourist southern coast.
Going out in Skiathos Island The social life of Skiathos can be found around of the coastal cafes that serve, tasty traditional "loukoumades". The evenings in Skiathos are very crowded and most of the people go close to the beaches and want to be refreshed by the wave. During the day however, the visistor can enjoy the spectacle of many ships that goes in and out in the harbor. Finally in western utmost exists one very good fishing market and ouzo selling restaurants. There you can taste traditional Greek cuisine.
