In the heart of big centres of ancient Culture - Dion, Vergina, Pella, Aghio Oros - Thessaloniki assembles in its museums exhibits and treasures unique.
In a beam of 100 kilometres, around the city can be found assembled certain of the most interesting places of Greek archaeological world, such as the big religious centre (Dion), that is in the shade of Mountain of Gods Olympus, the first capital of ancient Macedonians, the necropolis of Macedonian Kings in Vergina, the brilliant urban group of Pella, the elaborate painted tube monuments of Saint Athanassios and few kilometres outside from the city the archaeological space of Sindos, with the unique discoveries.
In the street to Chalkidiki, in the mystic cavern of Petralona, which is from Palaeolithic season, the science is crossed with the prehistoric fables. Very near can be found the punished Olynthos that was excavated from Philippos the Macedonian. Easternly in the prefecture is erected the "Macedonian Mystra's", the Byzantine castle of Rentina. Very near is the ancient Stageira, birthplace of Aristotle, who was one of the biggest philosophers of ancient world. The epicentre of Orthodoxy, and historical centre of Christianization of Slavon, Thessaloniki is simultaneously also starting line for the adoration in the abbeys of Athos, in Saint Term.
Thessaloniki was built from Kassandros on neolithic period in the shore of Thermaikos, and took the name from Alexander's the great sister. Foundation of Hellenistic world, first Macedonians seat of Romans empire, reign together with Byzantium, renowned centre between East and West, node in the Egnatia road, metropolitan centre of Balkan, cosmopolitan from the beginning of the century. It allowed the peaceful infiltration of populations and cultures, it incorporated religions, habits and traditions in the canvas of its multicultural past. Ancient temples, arches of triumph, Byzantine churches with elaborate mosaics and murals, imposing fortifications and towers, Othoman baths, brilliant public buildings, neoclasical mansions and graphic preservable neighbourhoods, certify the succession of cultures and compose the setting of city distinguished and important. Existed the centre of big working movements of country, but also the shelter of eradicated refugees, that ended there. City poetic and erotic "gave birth" to literary people, to poets, artists and big physiognomies of Greek social, political, economic and cultural life. Thessaloniki was conquered by Sarakins, Jewish, Armenian and the Othomans etc, all left their own marks, but this city remained always Greek as much as unique... |
