GENERAL INFO

Poros island lays right in the middle of the Saronic Gulf, 32 miles from Athens.
The Island of Poros revolves in cubistic planes, one of walls and windows, one of rocks and goats, one of stiff blown trees and shrubs and so on. Yonder, where the mainland curves like a whip, lie the wild lemon groves and there in the spring young and old go mad from the fragrance of sap and blossom. Visitors to Poros, immediately become witnesses to a strip of crystal clear waters, fringed by scenery that is blessed by mother-nature. In a three minutes boat ride you are on Peloponnese mainland, ready to explore Nafplion, one of the most beautiful towns in Greece, the ancient Mycenae, as well as the Epidavros village and the most famous theatre all over the world, the Ancient theatre of Epidavros. Poros is so close to Athens that you could wake up in the morning and in just a little more than an hour be walking around Acropolis, shopping in the flea market or wandering around Plaka looking for gifts or a nice place for lunch. Poros island, apart from its own beauty, gives good reasons to anyone who might want to visit Athens, Peloponnese and the Aegean Islands, and at the same time avoid staying in Athens. If you plan to visit Greece, to see the islands and the major archeological sites, Poros is the greatest Athens alternative.

George Seferis spent some days of his holidays on Poros at the Villa Gallini, writing poems and diaries, with beautiful descriptions full of thoughts. ".. It has something of Venice: The canal, communication between the houses being by boats, luxury, idleness, sensual temptation, something lustful, a place for international lovers, providing much magic. There is something of the closed space here, with the moon high up in the sky, and all day long the copper echo of the music from the naval school. Last night, going to bed, I stood for a moment on the balcony of my room, staring at the mountain lines opposite.."

Henry Miller, a famous American writer, traveled through Greece and visited Poros around 1938. His feelings were described in "Colossos of Maroussi" which is a travel notebook of Greece… "The sea was there but the shore too, the goats were clambering about. The lemon groves were in sight and the madness which is in their fragrance had already seized us and drawn us together in a frenzy of self surrender. I don't know which affected me more deeply - the story of the lemon groves just opposite or the sight of Poros itself when suddenly I realized that we were sailing through the streets. If there is one dream which I like above all others it is that of sailing on land. Coming into Poros gives the illusion of the deep dream. Suddenly the land converges on all sides and the boat is squeezed into a narrow strait from which there seems to be no egress. The men and women of Poros are hanging out of the windows, just above your head. You pull in right under their friendly nostrils, as though for a shave and haircut en route. The loungers on the quay are walking with the same speed as the boat; they can walk faster than the boat if they choose to quicken their pace... "
